practical and emotional support for those affected by cancer
Charity Number 1099299

THE DROP-IN CENTRE:
The drop-in centre in Addenbrooke’s Hospital main concourse provides a safe and comforting environment where those affected by cancer can find information, and support, and take time to discuss their concerns with knowledgeable and compassionate oncology nurses or volunteers.
The centre provides a library of books, videos, leaflets and pamphlets, details of regional support groups and other cancer resources. There is also internet access, together with guidance to recommended web sites,
The staff and volunteers of the Drop-in Centre also co-ordinate and deliver a number of outreach activities within the hospital including the daily cocktail round on ward D9 , and the art therapy project delivered in partnership with Kettle’s Yard and the Fitzwilliam Museum.
STAFF:
The Centre is run by the two co-ordinators job sharing, who are available to discuss medical aspects of a diagnosis or treatment, liaise with clinical staff at the hospital and other health professionals if necessary, discuss and arrange complementary treatments, find places on courses and in self-help groups, and offer emotional support and guidance to appropriate sources of help.
VOLUNTEERS:
The co-ordinators are assisted by a group of volunteers, who have undergone a rigorous and continuing course of training to enable them to support and assist patients, their families and carers. Many of our volunteers have personal experience of cancer and all share great empathy with patients and their families. They do a variety of different jobs including welcoming visitors at both centres, talking with patients and their families, doing the cocktail round on Ward D9, promoting the Art Project to in-patients and on occasion running errands for bed bound patients and assisting others within the hospital. Some volunteers also assist with administration, housekeeping and gardening.
